Citizens closing in on Eto'o
29 Jun 2009 - 11:39:28
Manchester City are believed to have had a £25million offer for striker Samuel Eto'o accepted by Barcelona.
City, who are reportedly willing to pay the Cameroon international a staggering £250,000 a week wage, have made the capture of Eto'o their priority this summer as manager Mark Hughes looks to transform the ambitious club into a genuine power in the Premier League and Europe.
News of the bid comes just 24 hours after Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed that City had made a 'stratospheric offer' to the 28-year-old frontman.
City have yet to confirm whether they have made an approach to either the club or the player but it appears that the ball is now in Eto'o's court over a potential move to the City of Manchester Stadium.
He is due to clarify his future at a press conference which has been called for Tuesday.
Laporta revealed: "Eto'o has a stratospheric offer from City which would convert him into the best paid player in the world.
"It's starting to become clear that he has this monster offer. He wants to stay but an offer like this is very difficult to refuse."
The former Real Mallorca and Real Madrid striker was a key member of the Barcelona side which won an unprecedented treble of Champions League, Spanish league and domestic cup last season.
City have already spent £18million on Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz and £12million on England midfielder Gareth Barry this summer.
Meanwhile, Argentina striker Carlos Tevez is also believed to be on his way to Eastlands after deciding to leave Manchester United.
