Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has confirmed that the Citizens are closing in on a deal to sign Hamburg's Germany international defender Jerome Boateng.
The 21-year-old is reportedly close to putting the finishing touches on a deal that could be worth around £11million.
Mancini told the Manchester Evening News: "We are quite close to signing him.
"Boateng is a good player, a young player and strong. He plays for the national team and there is a good chance to get him.
"He can play three different positions - central defence, right full-back or in midfield. If we find a player like that it is better for us."
Boateng has been with Hamburg since the summer of 2007, having previously made his name at Hertha Berlin.
The versatile defender made his full Germany debut in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Russia in October 2009 and was red-carded as his side clinched their place at the World Cup finals this summer.
