Bellamy to face police probe
21 Sep 2009 - 10:36:51
Craig Bellamy will be investigated by the police following his altercation with a Manchester United supporter who came onto the Old Trafford pitch at the end of Sunday's frantic derby clash.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are investigating the Wales international's indiscretion after the full-time whistle had blown on United's dramatic 4-3 victory.
Although there has as yet been no complaint, the police will make further enquiries.
"At the end of the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, a member of the public ran on to the pitch, and was detained by police and security staff," confirmed a police spokesman.
"During this time, there was an altercation between the man and a player from Manchester City FC. No formal complaint has been made by either party but police are continuing to make inquiries."
After the seven-goal thriller, City boss Mark Hughes had urged the authorities to go easy on Bellamy, saying: "I didn't see it but the guy shouldn't have been on the pitch. That isn't acceptable.
"I seem to recall Brian Clough clipping someone around the ear and he was lauded as a national hero. Maybe it will be the same case with Craig but I doubt it.
"I'm sure people will make a nuisance about it."
Meanwhile, Hughes also confirmed that City defender Javier Garrido was struck by a missile thrown from a section of United fans as he left the pitch at half-time.
