Barry admits World Cup doubts

21 May 2010 - 07:48:24

Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry still does not know whether he will be fit enough to take part in England's World Cup campaign.

Barry, 29, has been named in Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man squad for South Africa despite being sidelined with ankle ligament damage.

The defensive midfielder was left behind when the squad flew out to Austria for a pre-tournament training camp this week and he will play no part in Monday's international friendly against Mexico at Wembley.

Barry has stayed back to work on his recovery with the City medical staff but, two weeks after picking up the injury against Tottenham in the Premier League, the former Aston Villa star still does not know if he will be fit enough to play in the World Cup.

Capello will reduce the squad to his final 23-man selection on June 1.

"The treatment on my ankle has been going well," Barry told City's official website.

"I've been having regular sessions with the medical staff at Carrington and they are pleased with how things are going.

"It's too early to assess just yet as to whether I'll make it, I'll just have to keep having the treatment and see how things go over the next week or so.

"But I'm feeling positive still and the medical staff are being brilliant - they are doing everything they can to help me."
