Why Manchester United shouldn't re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo

For more windows than I care to count, Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Manchester United and this summer wasn't any different. To make matters worse we haven't even reached October and it I being reported that next summer will be the time that Ronaldo be on his way back to the Premier League.

I, for one, am a little tired of hearing it, and frankly I don't think it would be a good move for neither Ronaldo nor the Red Devils.

The fee that's being tossed around the tabloids is a world record £90 million, and honestly it's laughable. Don't get me wrong Ronaldo is a 'fairly' good player but I don't feel that he warrants such an astronomical fee. We know that the Glazier's aren't afraid to splash the cash but Ronaldo has virtually no resale value whatsoever.

Ronaldo isn't getting any younger and he is the wrong side of thirty. He only has a few years let at the highest level and there’s no way that £90 million would be a justifiable fee.

I also can’t see him fitting into Louis Van Gaal’s system. United have gone through a long transition period since Ronaldo joined Real Madrid. Sir Alex Ferguson has retired, David Moyes came and went, and now with Louis Van Gaal at the helm, the Red Devils are a very different team since he left for Sunny Spain.

Van Gaal is well known for liking a versatile player and Ronaldo is definitely not that. He can play as a left winger and very occasionally as a number 9 but that’s about it.

The Dutchman has also signed quite a few high profile young players, most notably Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial, and signing Ronaldo would only hinder those purchases. The advantage of signing these youngsters is that they can be adapted to certain positions, however signing Ronaldo would mean having to drop one of them, meaning it would hurting their other investments.

I’m a little sick of hearing that Ronaldo is guaranteed to join United next summer, and when he doesn’t I’m not looking forward to hearing that he has all but packed his bags the summer after.
