What Ilkay Gundogan could bring to Manchester United

It is common knowledge that David Moyes is looking to bolster his midfield and according to reports in Germany, Manchester United and Real Madrid have both made offers for the German international.

Speculation has risen in recent weeks and with Gundogan’s contract expiring in 2015 it is all uncertain where the £25million man could end up. The midfielder has recently spoken to the German press:

“My priority remains to recover as quickly as possible. About my future, nothing is decided. First I will talk with Borussia, but everything is completely open.” The midfielder has been ruled out since August with a back injury and in light of his recent comments many top European clubs have been alerted.

If Manchester United could clinch Gundogan’s signature what exactly would he bring to the fallen champions, well, first and foremost a top quality midfielder. Ilkay is a tenacious midfielder that has superb vision which is complimented by his passing ability, often compared to Xabi Alonso. Along with this the 23-year-old also possesses fantastic balance and acceleration which gives him the edge over his opponents when dribbling through the centre of the pitch, causing teams to be drawn out and leave gaps at the back.

Gundogan also has a tendency to shoot from distance and although his goal record is rather meagre a move to the Premier league could see the midfielder develop his attacking prowess in front of goal. Gylfi Sigurdsson is a player who has enjoyed greater success in England than abroad and for some attacking midfielders a move to England can be really beneficial for their careers.

The German has now played over 100 games in the Bundesliga and with Bayern Munich dominating domestically a move elsewhere may tempt the young midfielder.

It remains to be seen where Gundogan could end up but one thing is for sure, David Moyes will be doing all he can to improve his underperforming squad and Ilkay would be a fine addition to his midfield.
