We were well beaten: Sir Alex rues 'shoddy' goals as dream dies in Rome
Great men do not take failure easily and Sir Alex Ferguson made no real attempt to hide his disappointment after seeing an opportunity to cement his place as British football's greatest manager slip away last night.
Ferguson had not taken victory against Barcelona for granted last night - far from it - but he had at least expected his players to turn up at the Olympic Stadium and perform. That they did not will hurt for some time. United were second best in the 2-0 defeat.
'It was disappointing and we were beaten by the better team,' said Ferguson as he spoke half an hour after the final whistle.
'There were some disappointing performances but the individuals will recognise that themselves. It is difficult to put your finger on every part of the game but it just didn't go right for us on the night.
