Wayne Rooney's Manchester United testimonial against former club Everton has raised £1.2million for charity.

The sum comprises all profits, after operational costs, from August's sell-out match at Old Trafford and helps towards the Wayne Rooney Foundation's target of donating £5million to children's charities.

NSPCC, Claire House Children's Hospice, Alder Hey Children's Charity and the Manchester United Foundation will be beneficiaries of the money.

"I'd like to thank all the fans who came to the testimonial and made it such a special night," Rooney, a goal away from breaking United's all-time scoring record, said.

"They've raised a huge amount of money for children who are disadvantaged and it will make a real difference to their lives."
