Wayne Rooney's fantastic four puts United back on top of the Premier League

Wayne Rooney produced one of the greatest performances of his careeryesterday, scoring four goals in a match for the first time as Manchester United went back to the top of the Premier League with a 4-0victory over Hull City at Old Trafford.

Rooney, 24, became the first United player to score four in a gamesince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Everton in December 1999 and hishaul yesterday put United two points clear of Chelsea.

His manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: 'I'm sure he'll beat that! He's in great goal-scoring form and we saw great finishing.

'He's developing as a goalscorer, and I don't think [Cristiano] Ronaldo's departure comes into it. He's always been the main man.'

Rooney, who is expected to sign a new fouryear contract soon but who is attracting growing interest from Real Madrid, said: 'It was a great feeling. To score one in the Premier League is good, so four is great. It's nice to be top of the league. The teams below us have games in hand but all we could do was win our game.

'When the game was 1-0, anything could happen, so it was important to get the second. They had created a couple of chances and that gave us the wake-up call we needed.'

Hull manager Phil Brown said: 'You would have to say he's one of the best in the world.'
