Wayne Rooney trains with United reserves at own request

Wayne Rooney continued his quest for fitness by training with the Manchester United reserves on Thursday.

But while some may assume that to be evidence of a worsening relationship between the England striker and his club, apparently it was at the 27-year-old's own request.

Rooney -- who has been the subject of two bids from Chelsea, both rejected by United -- is on the comeback trail after a shoulder injury in pre-season, added to an earlier hamstring problem that together have seen him miss all United's pre-season friendlies.

And he is set to sit out Rio Ferdinand's testimonial against Sevilla on Friday as well.

But as the first team were only due to undergo light training on the eve of a match, it is understood that Rooney requested a session with the reserves to be put through more strenuous paces.

He was later named in Roy Hodgson's England squad for next Wednesday's friendly at Wembley against Scotland, adding weight to the claim he is trying to force his way back to fitness as quickly as possible.
