Wayne Rooney returns to action for Manchester United Under-21s

Wayne Rooney was named in the Manchester United Under-21s team to face Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Monday night having been out since February 13 with injury.

The England captain, 30, has been sidelined for two months because of a knee problem but will hope to return for the end-of-season run-in before Euro 2016, where his possible role in Roy Hodgson's team has been much debated of late.

Should he come through Monday's comeback unscathed, his return to the senior fold will be welcome news to United boss Louis van Gaal too after the Dutchman played Ashley Young as a makeshift forward in the second half against Tottenham.
