Van der Sar wants recognition
Edwin van der Sar is hoping to re-write the history books on Wednesday as Manchester United go in search of European glory.
The Red Devils will head to Rome this week hoping to topple Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final.
Success for United on Italian soil would see them become the first team to successfully defend continental football's top prize in its current format.
They would also become the first side since the legendary Ajax outfit of the early 1970s to defend European and domestic titles in consecutive seasons.
Van der Sar is determined to replicate the achievements of Johan Cruyff and co and believes victory over Barca at Stadio Olimpico would ensure the current United squad go down in the annals of football folklore.
"If you succeed on a certain level for a long period of time then you get a lot of recognition and that's what everybody wants," said the Dutch keeper.
"You want recognition for certain things and facts that you achieve during your professional life.
"If we can do it on Wednesday it will be great.
"What Ajax did in the 1970s is the big talking point. But we know the talk is about us winning it last year and becoming the first team to defend it. We have to make sure that we do it."
Bad memory
Van der Sar came agonisingly close to securing back-to-back Champions League crowns during his days at Ajax, only to suffer penalty shoot-out heartache against Juventus in 1996.
"I've tried to erase that memory," he added.
"I want to forget 1996 and just win it here with United. If we can win it again it will be a great feeling for us.
"Let's hope I can put the record straight from last time. I just hope that we win the game. How we win it, I don't care.
"We will do whatever it takes to win a prize like that again. If it has to go to 20 penalties then it doesn't worry me."
