United wait on Rio injury

// A bit of a hack but it works// The article snippet is wrapped onto a second line, even when #article-sub is emptyif( $("div#article-sub").children().length == 0 ) {$("div#article-sub").remove();} Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Rio Ferdinand will be fit for the Manchester derby after missing United's opening UEFA Champions League game against Besiktas.[LNB] United started their quest to regain the European crown with a 1-0 victory over Besiktas, with Paul Scholes heading the only goal 13 minutes from time.[LNB]However, the success was achieved without Ferdinand, who was forced to sit out a tight game in Istanbul with a groin injury.[LNB]Ferdinand, who only returned from a calf injury in last weekend's 3-1 win at Tottenham, is now facing a race against time to be fit for the visit of Manchester City on Sunday.[LNB]Not worth risk"We'll have to wait and see," Ferguson told Sky Sports when asked whether the centre-half would be fit for the derby clash.[LNB]"He felt his groin in training after the game on Saturday and it wasn't worth the risk.[LNB]"He couldn't even make the bench, so we'll just have to give him time for Sunday."[LNB]Ferguson was pleased to start his team's Group B campaign with three points following a game which contained few clear-cut chances.[LNB]He added: "Being the first game you always want to win that, but I was quite comfortable with the performance.[LNB]"I thought they did quite well most of the time, kept good possession. [LNB]"We were the better team, the concentration had to be good because it was a fantastic atmosphere and a test of the concentration and a test of the nerves."[LNB]Wayne Rooney was involved in an exchange of words with the Besiktas fans after being substituted just past the hour mark, but Ferguson missed the striker's discontent at being replaced.[LNB]"I didn't see that, I will need to see it," said Ferguson. "Wayne never mentioned it to me.[LNB]"They are volatile fans here. It's always been that way. You go back to 1993 when we played Galatasaray, the fans were incredible that time.[LNB]"They are very, very emotional and the fans can react."[LNB]
