With Van Gaal now formally taking on his duties as manager of Manchester United the focus is very much on assessing what he has inherited and bolstering areas of most concern such as the central defensive position.

Le10 Sport have reported that young Real Madrid defensive starlet Raphael Varane had been attempting to extend and improve his contract but Real had delayed to the annoyance of Varane. If the report is to be believed it could signal an opportunity for Varane and Manchester United who could certainly improve his £25,000 a week wages.

With impatience over the situation becoming critical according to the French report and with Manchester United already having contacted Real regarding his availability there could be movement, especially if Manchester United fail to land Mats Hummels.

Chelsea have also been linked with the player in the Express today who have reported that the defender has asked his representatives to organise a meeting with the Blues.

The 21-year old is a full France international and was named on the shortlist of the Best Young Player award at the FIFA World Cup where France were eventually eliminated by Germany in the quarter-finals.

Former France defender Frank Leboeuf believes that Varane has the potential to be better than Real Madrid legend Hierro as he said to the reporters “Many compare him to Hierro due to his technique, but on the physical level he is stronger and he is much faster.”

The tall 6’ 3” centre back joined Real Madrid from Lens in 2011 and has made 38 appearances to date for the Spanish giants.
