United target 40m move for Benfica star

Having impressed for Benfica against Manchester United during the 1-1 draw in the Champions League last month, Sir Alex Ferguson is now interested in bringing Nicolas Gaitan to the club.

The Argentine midfielder has also attracted interest from Inter Milan and Paris St Germain, but only this week signed a new five year deal with Benfica that will double his annual earnings to £2million.

Despite the new deal, Gaitan still has a release clause of £40million in his contract. Benfica had wanted to increase this but were unable to do so.

Ferguson may see Gaitan is a direct replacement for Paul Scholes and the ideal player to sit behind the forward. According to the Telegraph, he is now getting ready to make a move.

United wanted to make a bid for the Argentinian in the January transfer window, but the new contract may put the transfer on hold until the summer.
