UNITED Reserves made an impressive start to the defence of the Manchester Senior Cup against Bury at Moss Lane on Thursday night. The Reds, who beat Bolton Wanderers last May to lift the trophy, rarely looked in any danger of coming second best after racing to a 3-0 lead at the interval. Sam Hewson put them in front in the sixth minute and the lead was doubled just after the half-hour with Federico Macheda scoring from the penalty spot after skipper Corry Evans had been fouled inside the box. Cameron Stewart put United in the clear with the third goal nine minutes before the break. Second-half goals from Macheda and defender Scott Moffatt sealed an emphatic victory for the Reds.
