United beat Arsenal to Napoli striker with terms agreed

There has been much talk about the future of several key Napoli players over the past weeks with the likely departure of Rafa Benitez and the clubs failure to qualify for the Champions League.

One player of particular interest to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United is the player who netted 29 times in 56 appearances for Napoli, Gonzalo Higuain. It has been reported today in the Italian website Calciomercatoweb that United have won this particular transfer battle with terms agreed with the Argentine to join United on a five-year deal. The player has been offered £5m a year with the transfer fee between the clubs yet to be settled.

Higuain is understood to be valued in the region of £30-35million and is being seriously considered by a number of Premier League clubs looking for a world class striker to supplement their existing firepower. Chelsea were believed to be favourites due to the players existing relationship with Jose Mourinho from his playing days at Real madrid but this development if it is to be believed shows that United are doing bullish business this summer.

The 27-year-old Argentina international is in his prime, scoring 20+ goals per season in his last two seasons at Napoli and is now targeting Copa America glory before switching attention to a new club in the Premier League.
