02 November 2011 18:11

Manchester City enhanced their hopes of Champions League progress with a convincing 3-0 win at Villarreal whilst Manchester United made hard work of defeating Champions League minnows Otelul Galati.

- Bayern Munich 3-2 Napoli: Report

Bayern Munich suffered a second-half scare before sealing a 3-2 win over Napoli in the Champions League to stay top of Group A on Wednesday as both teams finished with 10 men.

Having cruised to a 3-0 lead at the break thanks to Mario Gomez's first-half hat-trick, Bayern were left rattled as Argentina defender Federico Fernandez scored the second of two headers with ten minutes left to set up a tense finale.

Gomez's treble means he has now scored 19 goals in all competitions this season for Bayern and this was the ninth time he has scored three goals or more for Munich since joining from Stuttgart in 2009.

- Inter Milan 2-1 Lille: Report

Inter Milan took a huge step towards qualifying for the Champions League knockout rounds with a 2-1 victory over French champions Lille at the San Siro here on Wednesday.

The victory kept the troubled Italians top of Group B, knowing that another victory will assure them of qualification.

Argentine pair Walter Samuel, with a header, and Diego Milito, from close range, scored the goals that ensured Inter have won more games in the Champions League than they have in Serie A this season.

- Manchester United 2-0 Otelul Galati: Report

Manchester United made hard work of defeating Champions League minnows Otelul Galati 2-0 but victory at Old Trafford put them top of Group C with two matches remaining.

Antonio Valencia's eighth-minute tap-in should have paved the way for a comfortable night for Sir Alex Ferguson's side but they struggled to raise their game on a low-key occasion.

It took until three minutes from the end for United, who lost Michael Owen to injury after just 10 minutes, to get their second when Wayne Rooney's long-range shot took a huge deflection off Cristian Sarghi.

- Trabzonspor 0-0 CSKA Moscow: Report

Trabzonspor failed to take advantage of having a man advantage late in their Champions League Group B clash against CSKA Moscow Wednesday, leaving their home fans frustrated with an insipid scoreless draw.

After the Russians had dominated most of the match, the hosts were given a much-needed boost when Ivory Coast forward Seydou Doumbia was red-carded in the 74th minute.

But Trabzonspor, who slipped to third after the 3-0 defeat in Moscow last time out, failed to capitalise despite a nervous finale in which both teams came close to snatching a winner.

- Villarreal 0-3 Manchester City: Report

Yaya Toure struck twice as Manchester City enhanced their hopes of Champions League progress with a convincing 3-0 win at Villarreal.

Mario Balotelli, making his first appearance in the competition this season, was also on target from the penalty spot as City recorded back-to-back wins over the Spaniards to move second in Group A.

It was a result that rarely seemed in doubt as City dominated at El Madrigal but of possible concern to them was the sight of the influential David Silva leaving the field clutching his back.

- Ajax 4-0 Dinamo Zagreb: Report

Ajax rekindled their Champions League qualification hopes by overwhelming Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 here on Wednesday to climb above Lyon into second place in Group D.

Dutch international right-back Gregory van der Wiel broke the deadlock in the 20th minute at the Amsterdam ArenA, lashing the ball into the roof of the net after being teed up by a brilliant back-heel from Christian Eriksen.

Siem de Jong released Miralem Sulejmani to double Ajax's lead five minutes later and de Jong got on the score-sheet himself in the 65th minute, after seizing upon another delightful Eriksen flick.

- Lyon 0-2 Real Madrid: Report

Real Madrid joined domestic rivals Barcelona in guaranteeing their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages as two Cristiano Ronaldo goals gave Jose Mourinho's men a 2-0 victory at Lyon.

Ronaldo scored a goal in each half to secure a win which maintains their five-point lead in the group and ensures their progression from Group F.

Ajax still have work to do to join Real but they did their hopes no harm with their crushing 4-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb, with goals from Gregory van der Wiel, Miralem Sulejmani, Siem de Jong and Nicolas Lodeiro.
