Trouble flares as United and Barnsley fans riot at Oakwell

Police made eight arrests at Oakwell last night, as trouble broke out between Manchester United and Barnsley supporters during their fourth round Carling Cup encounter.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said catering staff were forced to barricade themselves inside a food kiosk as fans ransacked stock and stole cash from the tills.

Four Manchester United supporters and four Barnsley supporters were arrested by police and taken to Barnsley Police Station. A further two arrests were made later, as Barnsley fans trespassed on a trainline.

"No-one was injured during this time but one police officer suffered a minor facial injury," said the Police spokesman.

A Barnsley spokesman said: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand."A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."
