It was believed for some time that Arsenal had sewn-up a deal to make Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin their player in the summer but seems that couldn't be further from the truth.

Schneiderlin certainly fits the bill as a box-to-box midfielder who is capable of making interceptions and carrying the ball into dangerous areas as he has proven with the Saints. The 25-year-old has spoken of his desire to play in the Champions League for a big club is understood to be valued at £21.4million which is not a figure that would concern Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United enter the crucial second phase of their rebuild with a Champions League qualifier all that stands between them and a seat at the top table of European competition once more.

The news that the player is now expected to sign for the Old Trafford club comes from Infosport who also famously broke the news that Mathieu Debuchy signed for Arsenal last summer so they do have form.

Schneiderlin joined Southampton in 2008 from Strasbourg on a four year contract for just £1.2m where he helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League. In February 2013 the player signed a new contract extension which could keep the player at Southampton until 2017. The 2013 season established Schneiderlin as one of the best holding midfielder players in England with the French ace credited with making the most interceptions, tackles and having the highest work-rate.
