Transfer News - United in for Torres; Rooney to Chelsea

We make no apologies for sticking with Wayne Rooney-related fodder for a third straight day today.

The wantaway star has been heavily tipped for a move to Manchester City, but there could yet be a twist in the tale.

The Daily Telegraph reports Chelsea are planning a £20 million bid for Rooney in the January window. While that figure is well below the £35m quoted for the 24-year-old, Chelsea could be favourites because United would prefer to deal with them than Manchester City.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of Rooney and the club have reportedly been monitoring his situation for some time.

Meanwhile, if Rooney does leave Old Trafford as expected United could move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

The Independent suggests Torres is ready to leave Anfield and United could be in pole position to sign him.

The Spanish international has apparently been unhappy for some time and looking for an opportunity to move on.
