Liverpool lifted the gloom hanging over their season with a 2-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester United on Sunday. Fernando Torres struck after 65 minutes and David Ngog added a second goal in stoppage time to give Liverpool a deserved three points after they had lost their previous four matches in all competitions. United, who ended with 10 men after Nemanja Vidic was red-carded for hauling down Dirk Kuyt in the 89th minute, could have few complaints although Antonio Valencia did lash a late shot against the crossbar for the visitors. Liverpool's Javier Mascherano was also dismissed in stoppage time. Chelsea top the table with 24 points from 10 games, with United on 22. Tottenham Hotspur have 19 points while Liverpool are tied on 18 with Arsenal and Manchester City, who are both in action later on Sunday. Liverpool's city rivals Everton were beaten 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers. (Reporting by Martyn Herman, editing by Tony Jimenez)
