Will the departure of Juan Mata to Barcelona help United in their pursuit of Thiago Alcantra?

Manchester United are determined to bring Barcelona youngster and midfield-creator Thiago Alcantara to Old Trafford, and in doing so help fund Juan Mata's move to Barcelona.

Mata appears to be one of the early casualties of Jose Mourino's Stamford Bridge arrival despite having an outstanding season. With predictions of him being offloaded this summer, Mata's long time admirer, Barca president Sandro Rosell is keen to land his man despite the fact that he still has three years left on his current deal.

There are a number of players fearing their exit at Barca. Alexi Sanchez, Cesc Fabregas, David Villa, Thiago Alcantara and Cristian Tello are all possible departues, with Manchester United keen on Fabregas and if rumours are to be believed Thiago in particular.

Thiago shone brightly in the U21 European Championships for Spain, and United will have to meet an £18m release clause to bring him to Old Trafford, a figure that in today's market appears good value.
