The future looks old at Spurs as 36-year-old Walker targets first-team

Jimmy Walker is preparing for Tottenham Hotspur's game against Manchester United on Saturday after being released by West Ham United and wants to be Spurs' number one goalkeeper. The 36-year-old is set to be on the bench as cover for Carlo Cudicini in the wake of Heurelho Gomes' leg injury. Harry Redknapp signed Walker after Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, refused to sanction a move for Portsmouth's David James. But Walker is aiming to make the most of his unlikely chance back in the big time and hopes to become Spurs' first-choice goalkeeper. Injuries and the emergence of Roy Carroll and Rob Green meant that after his move from Walsall, Walker made only 13 appearances for the Hammers in five years. His last first-team action came seven months ago on loan to Colchester but Walker said: 'Goalkeeper is a unique position. There's a keeper's union but you all want to be playing. 'Whoever's playing, as long as he's on his toes and playing well, we'll keep him on his toes. If he's playing, then he'll have to be playing well to keep ahead of us.'
