The Friday Five: Manchester United v Arsenal clashes in the Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger years
Manchester United and Arsenal's already intense rivalry stepped up a gear when Arsene Wenger arrived at Highbury in 1996 and began a bitter feud with Sir Alex Ferguson.[LNB] The two teams regularly battle it out for the Premier League title, and this Monday they meet with Arsenal just one point clear of United at the top. It was the Cup's last-ever semi-final replay. [LNB]Sylvain Wiltord scored for Arsenal at 58 minutes, after fellow Frenchman Fabien Barthez had blocked a shot from Freddie Ljungberg, as Wenger's men finished the season on a run of 13 unbeaten matches. [LNB]Manchester United 2-0 Arsenal Premier League, 24 October 2004 [LNB]Arsenal's Invincibles headed to Old Trafford on a 49-match unbeaten run for another ferocious battle. Wayne Rooney was given a controversial penalty in the 72nd minute after a challenge from Sol Campbell and Ruud van Nistelrooy fired it home. Rooney added another soon after. [LNB]A mass row ensued after the final whistle, with food hurled between the rivals in the tunnel and a pizza hitting Ferguson in the face.
