A lot has happened in Wayne’s World since ‘he made Premier League history
This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of Wayne Rooney’s wonder goal for Everton against Arsenal – the day a future England star was born, and the day he became the youngest goalscorer iin Premier League history.
Here we take a look back at the first batch of ten great moments in the career of the Manchester United striker. But first, Wayne recalls the day he rocked the football world for the first time.
He said recently: “My first goal, against Arsenal, was a great feeling, scoring for the team I grew up supporting. It was a special goal as well, incredible, so that feeling was great.
“Afterwards I went out and had a kick-about with my mates. It’s nothing different to what I’d been doing the previous ten years, so it was great to do that after the game as well.”
1. On October 19, 2001 - five days before his 17th birthday - Rooney scored his last-minute winning goal at Highbury, leaving England keeper David Seaman powerless. The goal made Rooney the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.
2. Rooney was named 2002's BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. Six days on from claiming this award he scored the winning goal against Blackburn Rovers in a 2–1 home win.
3. In January 2003, Rooney signed his first professional contract which made him one of world football's highest-paid teenagers.
4. On February 21, 2004, Rooney netted his first Premier League brace in a 3–3 away draw against Southampton.
5. At the start of the 2004-05 season, Rooney became the most expensive teenager ever when Manchester United splashed out an incredible £25.6m to take him to Old Trafford where he was given the number eight shirt.
6. He made his United debut on September 28, 2004 in a 6–2 home win over Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, scoring a hat-trick and so becoming the youngest player to bag a treble in the competition, aged 18 years 335 days.
7. Rooney was United's top league scorer in the 2004-05 season with 11 goals, and was credited with the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
8. His first trophy with United came in the 2006 League Cup and he was also named man of the match after scoring twice in United's 4–0 win over Wigan Athletic in the final.
9. Rooney collected his first Barclays Premier League title winner's medal at the end of the 2006–07 season.
10. He finished the 2007–08 season with 18 goals (12 of them in the league) as United clinched both the Premier League and the Champions League, beating Chelsea in the final.
