11 April 2009 14:47
90 + 4 ALL OVER: United win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.[LNB]90 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time.[LNB]88 Sunderland win a corner. But United clear and look to have this game won.[LNB]85 More changes. Sunderland bring on former United star Dwight Yorke for Tainio.[LNB]83 United are running the clock down as Anderson replaces Tevez.[LNB]81 Sunderland have been flattened by the goal and it looks like United are going to take the points and return to top spot.[LNB]80 Sunderland bring on Daryl Murphy for Reid.[LNB]76 GOAL UNITED (1-2)!!! What a substitution from Ferguson as Macheda is again the hero as he deflects a long-range Carrick effort for United to regain the lead.[LNB]75 United respond with the introduction of last weekend's last action hero Federico Macheda for the poor Berbatov.[LNB]73 Sunderland replace Davenport, who looks to be limping, with Paul McShane.[LNB]70 United win a corner as Ronaldo makes an immediate impact when playing in O'Shea. Sunderland clear their lines.[LNB]67 Here comes trouble. United introduce Ronaldo as Park makes way.[LNB]65 Rooney, United best player, does well down the left and passes to Berbatov. But the Bulgarian, who has not been at the races, side-foots a chance well over the bar.[LNB]63 Tevez has two chances inside the area, but is denied by two superb last-ditch blocks from Bardsley, who appears to pick up cramp as a result and we have a break in play.[LNB]60 United win a free-kick as Berbatov is felled. Tevez hits over the bar. Ronaldo is warming up on the touchline.[LNB]58 This is an excellent, end-to-end game now. Scholes will have the Stadium of Light groundsmen busy on Monday as he blasts low and hard, just wide of the post.[LNB]55 GOAL SUNDERLAND (1-1)!!! Foster made a mess of goalkeeping as he flapped at a cross and, after a bit of a scramble, Jones had time to poke in at the back post. Game on.[LNB]53 Danny Collins is penalised for going to ground and sliding Tevez from behind. United are dominating possession after a short free-kick is passed about before Carrick blazes high and wide.[LNB]51 Sunderland break and Cisse crosses low, but the ball is just beyond Jones at the back stick.[LNB]50 United win a corner as the excellent Rooney forces Davenport to deflect behind. Anton Ferdinand heads clear.[LNB]48 United are on the front foot and look intent on ending the game as a contest as Rooney fires narrowly over the bar from 20 yards.[LNB]46 WE'RE BACK: The second half is under way and Anton Ferdinand is booked for clattering Tevez.[LNB]45 + 1 HALF-TIME: United go in at the interval with a 1-0 lead. Scholes scored the only goal of the first half, but the visitors have not had it all their own way as an Edwards cross deflected against a post.[LNB]42 Rooney has impressed so far and curls just wide of goal. It was harsh that the forward was booked for handball. He has shown an excellent range of passing.[LNB]39 Sunderland do not want half-time. An Edwards cross deflects off O'Shea and hits the post as United scramble away for a corner. The kick falls to the edge of the box where Teemu Tainio blasts it straight into Scholes' gentleman's area. That'll bring tears to the eyes.[LNB]38 Reid curls at goal with his left foot from the free-kick. However, the ball drifts wide of the post and Foster had it covered.[LNB]37 After some pinball stuff on the edge of the United box, Cisse fires at goal with his right foot. Foster tips over for a corner. United half clear and Sunderland win a free-kick on the edge of the box as Rooney is booked for handball. Great chance.[LNB]34 Scholes is again allowed to ghost into the Sunderland area, but he cannot quite meet Park's cross. The Black Cats move to the other end of the field and Jones heads straight at Foster.[LNB]33 This time it is Jones' chance to poke just wide. Sunderland are threatening. But United remain dangerous on the counter-attack.[LNB]30 Davenport is proving a handful for a far-from-sturdy United defence as the Sunderland centre-back hooks just wide of goal.[LNB]28 With reference to former United hero and ex-Sunderland boss Roy Keane, chants of, 'there's only one Keano' from the visitors draws applause from their hosts.[LNB]26 A horrible mix up at the back as Evans prods the ball around his own oncoming goalkeeper, Foster. Edwards cannot quite reach the ball as it rolls the wrong side of the posts from a Sunderland perspective. United clear the corner as Evans atones.[LNB]25 The natives are growing restless as Jones beats Jonny Evans in the air but Cisse has not anticipated the knock down and Foster can claim.[LNB]23 Sunderland waste the opportunity as Michael Carrick nods away Reid's kick and Carlos Edwards then hits a follow up cross behind for a goal kick.[LNB]22 The home side win a free-kick on the right corner of the United box. A chance.[LNB]19 GOAL UNITED (0-1)!!! Scholes finds room in a crowded penalty area to turn in Rooney's cross. Sunderland will now have their work cut out.[LNB]17 United respond immediately. Rooney's corner is met by Vidic and the centre-back's header is cleared off the line. Berbatov's follow up bobbles across the face of goal. Rooney crosses again and Vidic overhead kick goes wide.[LNB]15 Sunderland win a corner. However, Reid's delivery is just too high for Davenport. This is a good spell for the Black Cats.[LNB]13 After a shaky start, Sunderland have settled. But Rooney wastes a good chance for United when his cross drifts behind the goal. The visiting fans are comfortably out singing the home supporters.[LNB]11 As Sunderland clear, you either love him or you hate him, Gary Neville fouls and goes in referee Rob Styles' book.[LNB]9 United win a corner as Calum Davenport heads away a Paul Scholes piledriver. Rooney's delivery is headed clear.[LNB]7 Andy Reid's kick is fumbled by Foster, but the highly-rated goalkeeper scrambles back to grab the ball just before the goal line. A major let off.[LNB]6 United are dominating midfield. But Sunderland have won a free-kick in their opponents' half.[LNB]4 The Black Cats respond with a break forward, but Kenwyne Jones is crowded out by a combination of Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic.[LNB]3 United are looking for Rooney at every opportunity. The England star is playing on the left of a front trio. Sunderland captain Phil Bardsley could have his work cut out.[LNB]1 The defending champions are immediately on the front foot and Rooney curls just wide of Gordon's far post from the edge of the box. Ominous signs for Sunderland.[LNB]KICK-OFF!!! United get the game going.[LNB] The teams are on the field. This promises to be a lively affair.[LNB] Kick-off is rapidly approaching and the teams are preparing themselves in the tunnel before making their way onto the pitch as classical, inspirational music booms around the stadium. Atmospheric.[LNB] Liverpool have thumped Blackburn 4-0 to return to the top of the table, so the pressure is on United to win. Ferguson will also have his fingers crossed after hitting back at Liverpool counterpart Rafa Benitez, suggesting the Spaniard is rattled in the title race. United, though, have won only once in their last four games in all competitions. They need a performance this afternoon. But Sunderland are fighting for survival and have concerns at the other end of the division.[LNB] Despite a warning from a colleague, whose blushes I will spare by ensuring he remains anonymous after a bit of a tummy bug upon his last visit to the North East, I have braved the food in the Sunderland media suite and it received the double thumbs up. The pitch-side press box, however, is not made to measure for those over six foot. Hopefully the game will offer plenty of distraction from any possible insetting cramp.[LNB] The teams are warming up on the pitch on a sunny afternoon on Wearside. Let's hope for a great game this today. There is plenty at stake. United are chasing the title and Sunderland are looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone.[LNB] Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has named a suprise first XI as World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo drops to the bench. But Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, and Carlos Tevez all start. Rio Ferdinand remains absent through injury. Sunderland name Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse in their starting line up, while Craig Gordon is in goal.[LNB]Man Utd team: Ben Foster, Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Park Ji Sung, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov Subs: Patrice Evra, Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Nani, Tom Kuszczak, Federico Macheda[LNB]Sunderland team: Craig Gordon, Phil Bardsley, Teemu Tainio, Carlos Edwards, Djibril Cisse, Danny Collins, Kenwyne Jones, Grant Leadbitter, Andy Reid, Calum Davenport, Anton Ferdinand.
