United's strategy is to put a few transfer balls in the air, and have enquiries running concurrently for a range of targets.

Manchester United are also focusing on a move for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to various reports in the British Press.

The Daily Star believe that David Moyes’ men will look to bid for the Croatia international as the move for Thiago Alcantara looks dead in the water.

The Barcelona youngster was on the brink of transfer to the Premier League champions, but Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich intervened and it seems certain that the Guardiola inspired Germans will win the race for his signature.

United now hope to lure Modric to Old Trafford and could make a bid of around €35m to Los Blancos.

The 27-year-old is said to be in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for this season, but the arrivals of Isco and Asier Illaramendi, allied to Xabi Alonso presence have cast some doubt over his prospect of playing time at the Bernabeu.
