Smith backing Leeds for promotion

Former fans' favourite Alan Smith believes Leeds United will win promotion the hard way this season - via a play-off final at Wembley.Smith, 28, who left his hometown club for Manchester United in a £7million deal in 2004 before moving on to Newcastle for £6million in 2007, feels Leeds have left it too late to force a top-two finish.Smith told Yorkshire Radio: "I think Peterborough and Leicester will be the two who win automatic promotion."It was a massive result for Peterborough against Leicester on Saturday. We know from last season the play-offs are a lottery, but it's about time Leeds had some luck at Wembley."It's a one-off game, but Simon (Grayson) has them playing well. There seems to be a togetherness about the fans and the players, and the city."Leeds lost 3-0 to Watford in the Championship play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in May 2006 and were edged out 1-0 by Doncaster last summer at Wembley in the League One play-off final.[LNB]
