Six of the Best - The day George tore apart the Cobblers

Any mention of Manchester United and Northampton in the same sentence invariably evokes memories of the mercurial genius of George Best.

Best's presence will loom again over Old Trafford on Wednesday when the two clubs meet in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The then 23-year-old swaggered into the old County Ground for an FA Cup fifth-round tie on February 7, 1970 having returned from a four-week suspension for kicking a ball out of a referee's hands.

He left having scored six goals in a dizzying 8-2 rout of the hosts.

Best said afterwards: 'I don't really class myself as a footballer. I call myself an entertainer. I know a lot of people have paid to see me do something spectacular and that's what I was trying to do on Saturday."

SIX OF THE BEST:

1. Best eludes his marker to race into the box where he leaps high to nod home Paddy Crerand's deep cross from the right..

2. Best roams forward and eludes advancing Northampton keeper Kim Book before sliding home his second from a difficult angle.

3. A mistake by a Northampton defender tees up Best to complete his hat-trick at the second attempt after his first effort is blocked in the box.

4. Best flings himself at a Brian Kidd cross from the left and steers his fourth goal past the hapless Book at the near post.

5. Best races clear onto a long through-ball and calmly slides home his fifth before casually trotting back towards the centre circle.

6. Best almost casually shakes off a defender and tricks Book as he runs his sixth goal into the Northampton net.
