Sir Alex Ferguson backing Danny Welbeck to pick England ahead of Ghana

[LNB]Welbeck made his international debut on Tuesday as a second-half substitute during England's friendly draw with Ghana. [LNB]Yet his appearance does not prevent the 20-year-old from playing for Ghana as only a cap in a competitive game executes a commitment he cannot get out of. Ferguson clearly has a vested interest. [LNB]Should Welbeck return to Manchester United for his loan spell at Sunderland at the end of the season as expected, then commit to Ghana, Ferguson could find he is losing his player to competitions such as the Africa Cup of nations, in addition to far lengthier international trips than he would encounter with England. [LNB]Ferguson insists it is not a conversation he has had with the youngster, whom he spoke to on Monday when news of Welbeck's call-up became public knowledge. [LNB]However, the last time he spoke to Welbeck about the matter, Ferguson advised the player to go for England. [LNB]'I would only get involved if he asked me,' said Ferguson. 'He spoke to me some time ago about the Ghana thing. At the time I advised him to play for England. Whether that has changed or not I don't know. [LNB]'There is an obvious attraction to play for England I would have thought. He lives in this country. He was born here. I don't see it being a huge problem as far as England is concerned.
