Second time lucky for Manchester United with club set to wrap up Herrera deal

According to reports from the BBC and various other national news outlets, Manchester United are close to finalising a deal for Athletic Bilbao and Spain midfielder Ander Herrera.

The current situation echoes that of last year when United had all but signed the player, with the deal falling through on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old would cost a reported £28 million, with a deal being completed as early as Tuesday. It is thought that incoming Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal - who is currently managing the Netherlands national team in Brazil - has asked for a deal for the highly rated youngster to be revived.

Herrera enjoyed a good second half of the season in La Liga with Athletic Bilbao, regaining his form from the previous season after reportedly struggling to cope with the break down of his potential deal to United at the start of last season.

Ander Herrera was part of Spain's ill fated Olympic squad in 2012 and would become van Gaal's first signer as manager of the Old Trafford club
