Wayne Rooney hopes to become the main man for Manchester United and England in perhaps the biggest season of his career. With United chasing a record four successive league titles, and England dreaming of World Cup glory, this season promises to be a memorable one for the striker. The 23-year-old has taken the goalscoring burden left by Cristiano Ronaldo in his stride having bagged six goals already this term. The former Everton youngster is already instrumental for Fabio Capello's England and Rooney is determined to fill the void created by Ronaldo and become the main instigator at Old Trafford. "As a footballer you want to be the best and I'm no different," he told the Daily Mirror. "It would be nice to be the main man but for me the team is the most important thing. "It's a big year for United, for England and for me personally. I'm going to become a dad and of course it's a massive season for everyone at United. "We've won the last three titles and it would be a big step if we could make it four in a row. Overtake Liverpool "To overtake Liverpool and get 19 titles would be brilliant, especially with me growing up there and being an Everton fan. "Then I've got the World Cup with England which is going to be a great experience, so I've a lot to look forward to." Having enjoyed a trophy-laden last three years at the Theatre of Dreams Rooney admitted that such success appeared unlikely when he first joined five years ago with Chelsea dominating the domestic game. "After the first year I was here I thought it might be a while before we won our first trophy, because Chelsea looked so strong," he added. "I was thinking it could be a while before we won the league again. Chelsea won it the first two years I was here, then we won it and have really kicked on since then."
