Rooney to return against Rangers

Wayne Rooney is set to return to the Manchester United starting line-up for Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Rangers at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson left Rooney out of his matchday squad for Saturday's Premier League trip to Everton in an effort to protect his star striker from the abuse he was expected to receive.

But Rooney will face the Gers and is expected to be joined in the United line-up for this Group C opener by Rio Ferdinand. Michael Carrick (Achilles) is definitely out.

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, O'Shea, Rafael, Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Smalling, Evra, Fabio, Valencia, Park, Gibson, Scholes, Anderson, Fletcher, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Owen, Berbatov, Hernandez, Macheda.
