Wayne Rooney returned to Manchester United's starting line-up for their FA Cup quarter-final at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

The England striker was dropped to the bench for his side's 2-1 loss at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, prompting media speculation about his Old Trafford future.

However, United manager Alex Ferguson told several British Sunday newspapers that the 27-year-old would be offered a new contract.

Ferguson then handed Rooney a starting berth against Rafael Benitez's Chelsea, while top scorer Robin van Persie dropped out of the team.

United are bidding to reach the FA Cup final for the first time since they lost to Chelsea in 2007, while holders Chelsea are seeking to win the tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons.
