Rooney hails 'best start'

Wayne Rooney feels he is currently enjoying the best start to a season since he joined Manchester United. The England international moved to Old Trafford from Everton in September 2004 and has become an integral part of the Red Devils set up. He has, however, paid the price for his own versatility at times, being asked to play out of position in a wider role. Sir Alex Ferguson has returned him to the head of his strikeforce this term, though, and Rooney has repaid his faith with five goals in as many games. "The first four or five games have gone reasonably well," said Rooney. "In fact it is probably the best start I have had to a season for Manchester United goalscoring wise. "I am really enjoying it. The manager has come out and said I will play up front and obviously I am pleased about that. "I was looking forward to the start of the season anyway. It was a bigger challenge because we had lost Cristiano (Ronaldo) and Carlos Tevez. "We haven't played as well as we can do but we have still got three good results and that is the main thing." Rooney is currently away on international duty ahead of Saturday's friendly date with Slovenia and an eagerly-anticipated 2010 World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday. A positive result at Wembley in midweek would see England book their place in South Africa, offering Rooney an opportunity to compete at a third major championship and right the wrongs of his previous efforts in 2004 and 2006. "I do have unfinished business in major tournaments," he said. "Because of the injury and then the red card (both in matches against Portugal), personally the tournaments have not just ended with England going out but in real disappointment for myself. "Hopefully, if we get there, I can have a bigger impact and influence the games and results positively for England."
