Spanish newspaper El Pais has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United both signed agreements last summer that stated the winger could join Real Madrid after 1st July 2009. However the newspaper also adds that United can pull the plug on the deal if the details of the agreement were released before 31st May this year. The story has refused to go away for almost three years, despite the best efforts of Sir Alex Ferguson and more recently Ronaldo. El Pais states that former Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is at the heart of the negotiations, along with the player's agent Jorge Mendes, with United agreeing to sell their prize asset for around £70million after July. Despite openly flirting with the Spanish champions in the past the current World Player of the Year has gone on record in the past few weeks to say that he will be at Old Trafford next season. Other optionsThe article also states that Perez, who is likely to announce on Thursday that he will be running for Real's presidency in June, may opt to sign AC Milan ace Kaka as 'he is less expensive and this would allow him to recruit more players'. Such stories are commonplace during election time in the Spanish capital but Perez has a history of pulling off big deals. The transfers of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham were all made during his previous stint at the helm from 2000 to 2006. However Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas believes the club should stop their ongoing pursuit of Ronaldo and concentrate on signing Spanish stars such as David Villa and David Silva, while integrating youth team players into the first team.
