Richards sees Jones with armband

Micah Richards has tipped Manchester United defender Phil Jones to become England captain in the future.[LNB] The pair are in contention to fill the right-back role in Montenegro on Friday, when England only require a point to seal their place at Euro 2012.[LNB]However, Jones' preferred role is in central defence, even if his ability to operate in front of the back four has drawn comparisons with United legend Duncan Edwards.[LNB]Richards knows that on club duty, Jones has to be the enemy.[LNB]However, he has no doubts the 19-year-old will eventually become a Three Lions' leader.[LNB]"Phil Jones is going to be England captain one day," Richards told The Guardian.[LNB]"He's got everything: pace, reads the game well, is good on the ball.[LNB]"He's at the right club as well because Sir Alex Ferguson promotes young players."[LNB]It is something of a surprise that Richards has only won a single cap under Fabio Capello, having been an almost constant presence under predecessor Steve McClaren.[LNB]There have been suggestions in the past that Richards is not too enamoured with the treatment he has received from Fabio Capello.[LNB]If that were true, he would welcome the statement of FA chairman David Bernstein that Capello will not be asked to remain in his job beyond next summer's European Championships.[LNB]However, the truth is not quite as straightforward.[LNB]Richards clearly would like to play more often for his country. But that would be true of anyone.[LNB]What he does acknowledge is the competition for that right-back role is not quite as weak as many would claim.[LNB]"People always say there aren't many right-backs," he said.[LNB]"But Chris Smalling is doing a good job for Manchester United. I rate Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker's been doing very well.[LNB]"I think I'm twice the player I was when I made my England debut at 19.[LNB]"There's no reason I can't get in there but it's about biding my time."[LNB]
