Real Madrid are to use Karim Benzema as a makeweight in the deal to prize Namanja Vidic away from Old Trafford this summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to keep hold of the wantaway Serb, who was voted United's player of the year in 2009, but finds himself once again bound by financial constraints.

A player swap, then, would certainly suit both parties, especially with new Madrid boss Jose Mourinho planning to bring in his own playing personnel.

United's frontline is in desperate need of reinvention having relied heavily on Wayne Rooney last term. Dimitar Berbatov has failed to match his price-tag and new boy Javier Hernandez was bought more with an eye on the future.

At the back, though, the club have plenty of options especially with the summer arrival of Chris Smalling from Fulham and the continued development of Jonny Evans.

Vidic's agent has hinted that a post-World Cup transfer away from Manchester could be on the cards. He has requested time for his client to think about his future after his duty in South Africa with Serbia.

Ferguson is a known admirer of Benzema having tried and failed to sign him last summer before being priced out of a move for the French international.

However, the 22-year-old former Lyon man has been desperately disappointing in his first year at the Bernabeu and ultimately lost his place in the Raymond Domench's World Cup squad.
