Manchester United are looking to sign French international Karim Benzema from Real Madrid as part of a swap deal with outgoing goalkeeper David de Gea, who has reportedly already said his goodbyes to Old Trafford team mates.

After losing the battle to keep star player David de Gea, the Red Devils have requested 27-year-old Karim Benzema as a sweetener in the deal that will see their two time Player of the Year return home to Madrid, according to the Manchester Evening News.

United firmly believe that Benzema, a target of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, can be lured to Manchester in a bid to bolster van Gaal's goal-shy forwards who have returned the clubs second worst goals tally in the Premier League era, with Rooney, Falcao, van Persie and Wilson finding the net just 62 times.

With Real Madrid unveiling new manager Rafael Benitez on Wednesday, the ten time European champions are bracing for a flurry of transfer activity.

Former Lyon striker Benzema has scored 133 goals in 281 appearances for Real Madrid, including 31 goals in 56 matches in competitions including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
