Real Madrid agent holds talks with United over superstar transfer

Old Trafford is buzzing at the moment with Champions League football and a renewed optimism under the management of Louis van Gaal. Not a day passes without United being linked with one of Europe's finest. With all the talk of Karim Benzema going to Arsenal it me strike some as surprising to see United also deeply involved in negotiations over the future destination of the French superstar.

Earlier in the week the Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward met with Karim Djaziri at the Savoy hotel in London with reports that United could lodge a £40m bid for the Real Madrid goal machine. The player has been exceptionally consistent and United could soon find they have no world-class strikers to compliment the forward prowess of Wayne Rooney. Rooney himself found himself finishing the season as the top-scorer at United with just 14 goals, the lowest tally for a top-scorer since Frank Stapleton in 1982.

Benzema has had fans at Old Trafford for some time with Alex Ferguson handing the then Lyon player with a United shirt after his side drew 1-1 in 2008. The striker however didn't take the hint and instead joined Real Madrid the following year for £35m.

The French international is under no pressure to move on with a contract set to run until 2019 but it is thought United could use this period of transition at Real Madrid to lure a player or two away.
