Wayne Rooney nominated for PFA Players' Player of the Year Award 2012

Rooney began the campaign with a goal in the first league game against West Brom and scored once again a week later at home to Tottenham.

In late August he scored his 150th goal for United, the first of a hat-trick, in a 8-2 demolishing of Arsenal.

Another hat-trick soon followed in the next game against Bolton, he became only the fourth player in the Premier League to score a hat-trick in consecutive games.

As a result he was now level with Sir Bobby Charlton, with seven United hat-tricks.

A red card while on International duty saw him left out of the starting line-up for the game with Liverpool on 15 October but he returned and scored twice in the Champions League group fixture with Otelul Galati.

In doing so he surpassed Paul Scholes as the most-scoring Englishman in Champions League history.

His two goals against Manchester City in January saw him overtake Mark Hughes in United's all-time top goalscorers table heading up to seventh place overall with 164 goals.

In February 2012 Rooney scored two goals from the penalty spot as United came back from a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Rooney marked his 500th senior career game by scoring two goals as United beat rivals Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford. This was also his 350th game for United in all competitions.

His goal against Tottenham in March sent him up to sixth in United's all-time top goalscorerschart, he is currently on 29 goals for the season with 22 coming in the Premier League.
