Paul Scholes reveals he'd rather have been a striker than a Manchester United midfield maestro

Paul Scholes admits he had more fun when he was playing up front for Manchester United. The Old Trafford veteran has developed into one of the most respected deep-lying midfielders in the world, but admits he preferred grabbing the glory as a centre forward. 'When I was younger, I used to get forward a lot more than I do now,' Scholes told the Daily Express. 'I think the manager expects me to stay in the middle of the park nowadays and pass to the players who can go forward and score goals. 'I'd still like to get forward every now and then and chip in, but you just have to play however the manager wants you to play.  'The season I enjoyed most in my career was the one (2002-03) when Iplayed a lot of games up front with Ruud (van Nistelrooy). That's theone and only time I've managed 20 goals in a season.' In contrast, the 34-year-old hit just three in 34 games last season and Scholes revealed he likes to stay behind in training for extra shooting practice in a bid to get firing again. He has amassed 134 goals in his 16 seasons and, as for his favourite? 'There are a few; against Newcastle in the FA Cup final in 1999 was nice because it's always a dream as a kid,' he said. 'I also scored one in an FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park against Arsenal (in 2004) when we won 1-0. And I remember scoring a volley at Bradford - that's about it really. 'The one against Inter Milan in '99 wasn't the best of goals, but it was important at the time because it got us to the Champions League semi-final.'
