Football's longest transfer saga of the summer has finally been completed with Paul Pogba re-joining Manchester United for a world record transfer fee.

Pogba will be given the vacant number six shirt after sealing the £89million move from Juventus on a five-year deal.

Here, football.co.uk looks at past players to have worn the illustrious shirt number in the history of the club.

NOBBY STILES (1968)

The 1966 World Cup winner donned the number six shirt in the famous 4-1 extra-time victory over Benfica in the 1968 European Cup final, 10 years after the Munich air disaster that claimed 23 lives associated with the club.

KEVIN MORAN (1985)

Not the most famous name to wear the number six shirt but he did create history in it. He became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final for a professional foul on England midfielder Peter Reid.

GARY PALLISTER (1989-1998)

Signed from boyhood club Middlesbrough for £2.3million in 1989, Pallister became a stalwart in the United backline where he formed one of the best central defensive partnerships in the history of the club alongside Steve Bruce.

JAAP STAM (1998-2001)

He signed for £10.6million in 1998, a then-record for a defender. The move paid off as United won the Champions League trophy in 1999 as well as a Premier League title in each of his three seasons at Old Trafford.

RIO FERDINAND (2002-2003)

Ferdinand broke the British transfer record in his move from arch-rivals Leeds. He only had one season wearing six, which resulted in another Premier League victory. Ferdinand switched to number five in 2003 and further success followed, winning six league titles in total, three League Cups and a Champions League during his career at Manchester United.

WES BROWN (2003-2011)

Brown came through the ranks at United after signing for the club's academy at the age of 12. He went on to make over 350 appearances for the Red Devils where he won two Champions League trophies, seven Premier League titles, three League Cups and two FA Cups before leaving for Sunderland in 2011 after 19 years associated with United.

PAUL POGBA (2016)

Pogba returns to Manchester United for a world record fee but will he follow in the footsteps of previous number sixes and deliver trophy success at Old Trafford?
