Own goal rescues United

Anton Ferdinand's stoppage-time own goal rescued a point for Manchester United in a 2-2 against Sunderland at Old Trafford. It seemed the Black Cats were about to record their first win at the stadium since 1968 when they entered the time added on clinging to a lead provided by Kenwyne Jones' header. But once again, United fought back and Ferdinand turned an off-target Patrice Evra shot into his own net to earn a share of the spoils. The Black Cats took a shock early lead when Jones held the ball up after collecting Steed Malbranque's pass and eventually found Lee Cattermole with a lay-off. He quickly switched play to the left, where Darren Bent turned away from John O'Shea before blasting a low effort right into the bottom corner. United equalised when Nani burst past Kieran Richardson and fired a low cross into the six-yard area that Wayne Rooney nearly turned home. Craig Gordon saved that effort with his chest. But when Ferdinand cleared to O'Shea and the Irishman swept another cross into the Sunderland area, Dimitar Berbatov met it perfectly wide an overhead kick that flew into the corner. However, they were level for only eight minutes as Andy Reid shrugged off Darren Fletcher's challenge, then embarked on a run which took him to the edge of the home box before chipping a cross towards Jones. Ben Foster would argue there was a foul on him but he still should have been far stronger as he went up with the striker, who won the duel and steered the ball into an empty net. Sunderland were unlucky not to hold on, with Evra`s deflected strike snatching a point.
