Michael Owen, a Kop legend who made the switch from Liverpool to Manchester United, albeit via Real Madrid and Newcastle, has picked an Manchester United x Liverpool XI ahead of this weekend’s Premier League showdown.

Surprisingly, the former Liverpool golden boy has only selected THREE of the Reds current squad to feature in the combined XI, opting for Benteke up front, with Coutinho in a wide right attacking position and Skrtel in defence.

The rest of the team is comprised of Manchester United regulars with David de Gea between the sticks, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw in defence; Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger form a two-man midfield Wayne Rooney at number 10 and Memphis Depay on the left wing.

Speaking to the Premier League’s official website, Owen admitted he believes United are stronger than their bitter rivals this season.

"Having played for both teams I know this is going to upset quite a few people," he said. "But Manchester United are slightly ahead of Liverpool in terms of quality at present."

Manchester United x Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1):

David de Gea; Matteo Darmian, Martin Skrtel, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw; Michael Carrick, Bastian Schweinsteiger; Philippe Coutinho, Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay; Christian Benteke.
