October revolution! CSKA axe Juande on anniversary of Spurs sacking

26 October 2009 13:29
Juande Ramos has been sacked as CSKA Moscow boss following a humiliating defeat on the anniversary of his dismissal by Tottenham Hotspur.[LNB]The Spaniard had his contract torn up after just 47 days, with his side struggling to qualify for European competition next season.[LNB]Spurs bit the bullet on October 25 last year after a disastrous start to the season that had seen them lose seven matches out of 12 and yielded no League wins at a time when there was talk of cracking the Big Four.[LNB] The exits are situated here, here and... Juande Ramos is leaving Moscow after 47 days[LNB]And now CSKA have realised they too were pinning their hopes on the wrong man, with Sunday's 3-1 home defeat by FK Moscow seeing them drop to fifth in the Russian Premier League with four games to play. [LNB]Ramos said he had left CSKA by 'mutual consent' after concluding it would be difficult to qualify for next season's Champions League campaign.[LNB]United target: Igor Akinfeev[LNB]And he revealed the Muscovites could be preparing to sell some of their star players to make up for a shortfall in revenue.[LNB]A statement on Ramos's website said: 'Both parties have decided to cancel the work contract that binds them.[LNB]'Juande had already agreed to revise his contract with CSKA in the case that the team did not qualify for the Champions League for the coming season.[LNB]'And, for the club's part, the 'Red Army' are aware of their budget limitations and are planning a new project whereby they will sign young national footballers to reduce costs.'[LNB]His words will encourage Manchester United, who are keen on goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, and Chelsea, who are understood to be interested in midfielder Alan Dzagoev. Midfielder Milos Krasic has also been linked with a winter move to AC Milan.[LNB]Only the top three qualify for next season's Champions League. Coincidentally, Ramos arrived last month saying he would concentrate on Europe's top competition, but CSKA have lost two of their opening three group matches - against Wolfsburg and Manchester United.[LNB]They beat Besiktas 2-1, but that proved to be one of just four wins in his nine matches with the Russian giants.[LNB] Victory: Gary Neville celebrates as Manchester United beat CSKA 1-0 in Moscow[LNB]His brief reign was characterised by chaotic team selection, with Ramosseeming to be unclear what was his strongest starting line-up.[LNB]The brevity of his reign is surprising, but the 55-year-old journeyman is now looking for his 15th job in 19 years.[LNB]His sacking comes a year and a day after his exit from north London - and exactly two years after he arrived at Spurs.[LNB]He started well at White Hart Lane, arriving with the stellar reputation of a man who had won back-to-back UEFA Cups with Sevilla.[LNB]But his methods were soon questioned, his English was poor, and Tottenham tailed off dramatically in his first season, finishing 11th in the Premier League. However, he did deliver Carling Cup glory with defeat of Chelsea.[LNB] Earning his Spurs: Juande Ramos arrived at Tottenham with great optimism[LNB]Ramos may have left England in disgrace, but he somehow managed to land the Real Madrid job less than seven weeks after picking up his P45.[LNB]He steadied the ship at the Bernabeu, pushing Barcelona in the titlerace, but a 6-2 defeat by their rivals last May made it clear that hewas not the man to lead the ushering in of the new Galacticos era.[LNB]Shock: Ramos took the reins at Real Madrid last season[LNB]His task at CSKA was undoubtedly difficult, with the club struggling from the mid-season loss of arguably their top two players. Yuri Zhirkov was sold to Chelsea, while Brazil striker Vagner Love was allowed to go home on loan for a year with Palmeiras because of personal problems this summer.[LNB]But after a similarly under-achieving period under the control of Brazil legend Zico, CSKA have realised that perhaps appointing a foreigner is not the way forward.[LNB]Leonid Slutsky has been put in charge. CSKA play United at Old Trafford on Tuesday week.[LNB]The 38-year-old quit Krylya Sovetov on October 9 after a summermatch-fixing scandal. UEFA recently sent a letter to the RussianFootball Union requesting it investigate Krylya's match against Terek Grozny in June, among other games.[LNB]That match, which Terek won 3-2, caused outrage as the Russian mediareported that one individual staked about £250,000 on a Terek win onthe Betfair Internet betting exchange.[LNB] CSKA Moscow 0 Manchester United 1: Valencia wins cold war - strike is a boost for wingerWho are CSKA Moscow?
