Email me your thoughts on the game at dan.ripley@dailymail.co.uk [LNB] Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United (7.45pm)Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Guthrie, Tiote, Gutierrez, Lovenkrands (Ireland 69),Ameobi (Ranger 72).Subs: Soderberg, Perch, Ryan Taylor, Steven Taylor, Kuqi.[LNB]Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Nani (Owen 81), Carrick, Anderson (Valencia 70), Giggs, Hernandez, Rooney.Subs: Kuszczak, Park, Fabio Da Silva, Evans, Gibson.[LNB]Referee: Lee Probert (Wiltshire) [LNB]83min: That should be a penalty. Rooney's shot hits Tiote on the arm inside the box and they are raised. No excuses there and the hosts have got away with that.[LNB]81min: I feel a bit sorry for him here, Michael Owen comes on for Nani and is heavily jeered at the home of his former club. Plenty of fans showing a few banknotes at him.[LNB]80min: Newcastle are playing more direct this half and although their attacking threat has diminished their defending has been brilliant. Rooney restricted to firing a 25-yard effort just over the bar.[LNB]78min: Yup, Giggs' effort clips the wall and goes out for a corner.[LNB]From that though, Nani goes close as he receives a short pass before running across goal and firing just wide.[LNB]77min: Chance here for Man Utd as they win a free-kick on the edge of the box with Mike Williamson booked for giving the foul away. Judging by the previous efforts don't hold your breath here.[LNB]74min: Vidic has gone off for the moment to treat a cut on his face. good chance for Newcastle to give some aerial bombardment.[LNB]72min: Seconds after Ireland fires a right-volley just wide, Nile Ranger comes on fro Ameobi.[LNB]70min: First change for Man Utd, Antonio Valencia replacing Anderson.[LNB]69min: He has had a shocker to be fair. Evra cuts the ball back for Giggs 12 yards out, but he scuffs his left foot shot wide.[LNB]You would back him every day of the week to score that, I have not seen him play this bad in a long, long time.[LNB]Stephen Ireland is on for Lovenkrands to make his Newcastle debut.[LNB]66min: Free-kick for Man Utd, but Rooney's 25-yard effort lacks the power to trouble Krul who claims a comfortable catch.[LNB]64min: Tiote takes one for the team as he chops down Rooney who was in a good position to make a beeline to goal. He is booked.[LNB]63min: Wow, what  ball that is! Anderson's long ball over the top has the Newcastle centre-backs beaten as Hernandez storms through, but Fabricio Coloccini manages to make his presence felt by blocking the Mexican's path to goal which enables Krul to slide out and claim.[LNB]62min: Giggs sums his, and the game as a whole up after he over-hits a cross.[LNB]No sign of changes from either side though.[LNB]59min: A penalty shout for Newcastle after Lovenkrands appears to be tripped by Anderson inside the box. The forward appears to be looking for that but contact is there and if that was outside the box I think he would have got a free-kick. So yeah, a penalty if we go by the laws of the game, nothing given though.[LNB]57min: Man Utd go forward on the counter and really do look threatening going forward. But once again the final delivery is poor as Krul collects Nani's cross.[LNB] Heads up: O'Shea jumps up to win a header[LNB]54min: Man Utd much the better side in the opening minutes to this half, but do they look any closer to getting a goal? Not at all, Newcastle defending very well.[LNB]51min: Half-chance for Man Utd. Nani's delicate chip in the box is met by a Giggs header but it lacks power and direction as Krul takes comfortably.[LNB]49min: Can anyone take a set-piece? Giggs' corner leaves Anderson with a difficult header at the near post which he heads wide.[LNB]48min: After a further two corners for the visitors, Newcastle clear, Man Utd look a lot more dangerous though and they win a another corner second later.[LNB]47min: Early pressure from Man Utd as they win a corner from Rooney's deflected cross. Nani's cross though only succeeds in causing a  collision between Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson. Once they collect their thoughts together it will be another Man Utd corner.[LNB]Second-half: Away we go again.[LNB]20.47: Newcastle players a bit late coming out, no changes though as we prepared to get restarted.[LNB]20.43: While Man Utd haven't been sloppy they have not been at their best and the way the hosts have been playing they will need to improve to win this.[LNB]20.40: A few empty seats around the ground this evening (not just because everyone is getting a half-time pie). Bit surprised by that, but not as surprised as I am by the hosts performance. On the beach they are not.[LNB]20.35: Don't be fooled by the scoreline it has been a cracking game. We are just lacking someone who can find his shooting boots.[LNB]Half-time: Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United[LNB]45+2min: Nearly a late twist to end the half. United counter and after Giggs feeds in Hernandez, his shot inside the box is deflected behind for a corner, which there is no time to take.[LNB]45+1min: That is as harsh as yellow cards get. Carrick slightly trips Ameobi in the centre but no way is that a bookable offence. Frustrating first half for the midfielder.[LNB] Big boots to fill: With Sir Alex Ferguson in the stands, Mike Phelan (centre right) took charge on the touchline for Manchester United[LNB]45min: One minute added on.[LNB]44min: BIG let-off for Man Utd. Barton hits a fantastic cross from deep and after Ameobi drags Vidic away with a clever run, Lovenkrands is left with an open goal to head at. But he gets it all wrong and it almost just bounces off him and wide. Alan Shearer used to live off those.[LNB]41min: Nice try from Barton but although his shot across goal is on target, Van der Sar again comfortably claims. He had the right idea though, how many times does a player get a slight deflection to turn it in?[LNB]40min: Another chance for Newcastle from a set-piece after Smalling's foul on Ameobi is right on the corner of the penalty box, bit needles that shirt pull.[LNB]39min: Slight break in play as Guthrie goes down requiring some treatment.[LNB]To give you an idea of the tempo of this game, most of the players on the pitch go to the touchline for a quick drinks break.[LNB]37min: Excellent play, again it's all Man Utd on the edge of the box but they can't find a way through and Newcastle manage to intercept and start a counter.[LNB]Gutierrez manages to find a good position on the left but his cross is disappointing and the danger passes.[LNB] Get out my way! Newcastle's Mike Williamson (left) and Shola Ameobi disrupt each other going for the same header[LNB]35min: Man Utd's best spell this, they are applying heavy pressure on the edge of the Newcastle box but it ends with Giggs' cross being intercepted by Danny Guthrie.[LNB]32min: One sloppy Guiterrez shot aside, the chances have dried up in the last few minutes. Newcastle are making the visitors work for this and the visitors are still struggling in midfield.[LNB]29min: Pardew is fuming and I don't blame him. Nani appears to dive inside the Newcastle box and although he doesn't win a penalty, it looks such an obvious act of simulation he should probably be booked. Lee Probert elects to just have a quiet word.[LNB]28min: Interesting game this, it's fairly open and neither side is dominating but Anderson and Carrick just can't get into this one.[LNB]25min: On target, but Van der Sar eats them for breakfast as the shot lacks power with the Dutchman taking comfortably.[LNB]23min: No excuses now, Anderson is the latest to be intercepted by Barton on the left and once again Newcastle counter.[LNB]This time it ends with a foul 25-yards-out and the hosts have a free-kick in a handy position here.[LNB]22min: It's been a good opening to this match and Newcastle have another chance form a corner.[LNB]The cross comes in but Vidic manages to head clear.[LNB]19min: It's World Championship snooker season, and with that in mind 'that's a bad, bad miss'.[LNB]Rooney manages to burst inside the penalty area but with just Krul to beat he blasts over.[LNB] Denies: Krul (left) prevents Hernandez (right) from tapping home in the opening minutes[LNB]17min: Bit desperate from Hernandez but that is not a bad effort. Chicharito attempts to curl one in from 25-yards-out but it's just wide and over.[LNB]14min: What is Carrick playing at? The local lad plays a careless back header over the top of his defence that sends Peter Lovenkrands through on goal. Luckily for Man Utd, Chris Smalling manages to get back in time to hustle out the forward.[LNB]Make no mistake about this, the visitors are there for the taking.[LNB]11min: Is no one learning anything for Man Utd? This time it's Patrice Evra losing out to Barton on the left and Newcastle counter.[LNB]So often his crossing has been brilliant this season but not this time, as his ball into the box clears Ameobi and everyone else for that matter.[LNB]9min: Newcastle have taken complete control of this game. Giggs loses out to Barton on the left, with the Newcastle midfielder winning a free-kick out wide on the edge of the box moments later after a challenge from the Welshman. The visitors manage to clear their lines.[LNB]6min: Speaking of great goals in this fixture we so nearly have another! Jonas Guiterrez's turn of pace leaves John O'Shea and Nani for dead on the left before he waltzes past Michael Carrick on the edge of the box. the hard work done his right foot shot deflects out for a corner seconds later.[LNB]Seconds later Shola Ameobi, has a chance from a far post cross but he fails to get enough on it to trouble Van der Sar.[LNB] No way through: Newcastle's Cheik Tiote (right) blocks Manchester United's Nani[LNB]5min: Newcastle respond with some pressure inside the box of their own, but Joey Barton elects to cut the ball back rather than volley at the far post and only succeeds in giving the ball to Nemanja Vidic.[LNB]3min: But he makes up for it! Rooney beats the offside trap on the left and after advancing down the flank, plays a low cross for Hernandez who looks certain to tap home until the keeper fumbles him at his feet.[LNB]1min: Thanks for that Tim. The keeper all ready nearly gets himself into trouble as he casually dribbles the ball back into the box before picking it up under pressure from Giggs. I have seen those end in tears.[LNB]Kick-off: Man Utd get us going.[LNB]19.44: Will be interesting to watch the keepers. At one end we have Edwin van der Sar, who still amazes me how he can keep springing around the goal past 40.[LNB]While young Tim Krul is at the other who has impressed me whenever I have seen him play.[LNB]19.41: Teams are out at St James' Park. Lovely end of season sunshine provides the backdrop.[LNB]19.38: So what are Newcastle playing for? Well they can all but secure safety with three points that would take them past the fabled 40-point mark.[LNB]Speaking to former boss Chris Hughton today, he is certain one more victory is all it will take.[LNB]It would put them nine points clear of the bottom three.[LNB]19.35: One man it can only get better for on this ground is Stephen Ireland.[LNB]The last time he was here Newcastle won 6-0...except he was making his debut for their opponents that day Aston Villa. Doh![LNB]19.32: Yes I know it is still better than ?50million Fernando Torres, but let's give the poor Spaniard the night off.[LNB]19.31: I am still trying to get my head around the exclusion of Berbatov from the squad.[LNB]He hasn't played enough games to be 'knackered' (and even when he does he barely gets out of second gear).[LNB]He may be top scorer this season, but when it matters in big games he has gone missing quite a few times. Not what you expect from a ?30million striker.[LNB] Winning start: Darren Fletcher (centre) scores Manchester United's second goal at Old Trafford, as the hosts ran out 3-0 winners in the reverse fixture earlier this season[LNB]19.27: Over the weekend all the Premier League fixtures were reversals of the first day of the season and this one is no different.[LNB]Back in August it was a stroll in the park for Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Berbatov, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs all scoring in a 3-0 win. Can't see that happening again tonight.[LNB]19.24: Of course they can just as easily lose tonight and Arsenal overturn Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Then the gap would only be three points and the title race is back on...stranger things have happened.[LNB]19.21: What a week for the title race then. Newcastle is no easy place to go and win but their home form has been patchy all season and Man Utd must fancy their chances of opening up that nine-point-gap.[LNB]After that they will look to put their feet up and hope Tottenham can take all three points in the north London derby against Arsenal tomorrow.[LNB]19.17: Wayne Rooney returns from suspension as Manchester United attempt to close in on a 19th Barclays Premier League title at Newcastle.[LNB]The England striker is one of five new faces drafted into the side which lost to arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday, along with Chris Smalling, Ryan Giggs, Anderson and Javier Hernandez.[LNB]Central defender Rio Ferdinand is one of those to make way as the suspended Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia, Park Ji-sung and Dimitar Berbatov are also replaced, with the England defender and the Bulgarian striker not even named among the substitutes.[LNB]Newcastle boss Alan Pardew makes three changes with Tim Krul replacing the injured Steve Harper in goal and Cheik Tiote and Shola Ameobi returning, while there is a seat on the bench for the first time for loan signing Stephen Ireland.[LNB]19.14: Full team news:[LNB]Newcastle v Man UtdNewcastle: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Guthrie, Tiote, Gutierrez, Lovenkrands, Ameobi. Subs: Soderberg, Perch, Ryan Taylor, Ireland, Steven Taylor, Ranger, Kuqi.Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Hernandez, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, Owen, Park, Fabio Da Silva, Evans, Valencia, Gibson.Referee: Lee Probert (Wiltshire)[LNB] Take that: Rooney equalises with a cracking volley at Newcastle in April 2005[LNB]19.11:...and there is the goals. Wayne Rooney's volley six years ago takes some beating but it's second-best to Philippe Albert's chip in Newcastle's 5-0 win in 1996 that tops the lot for me in this fixture.[LNB]What a game that was by the way...[LNB]19.07: To the fixture in general, if there is one game I would happily pay box office prices to watch it's Newcastle v Manchester United.[LNB]Check out the results over the years. The Magpies winning 4-3 in 2001 to the Red Devils 6-2 victory in 2003...and that is just the pick of the bunch.[LNB]19.03: Will get the full subs over when I can but it looks like there is no sign of Dimitar Berbatov for the visitors.[LNB]19.00: So now we know come the end of the season they won't be partying in Manchester like it's 1999. But cheer up Man Utd fans, you still have a double on your hands and what better way to banish the memory of that FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City by opening up a nine point gap at the top of the table?[LNB]Hard life supporting Sir Alex Ferguson's side isn't it?[LNB]Starting XIs:[LNB]Newcastle: Krul, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Williamson, Barton, Guthrie, Lovenkrands, Simpson, Gutierrez, Ameobi, Tiote.[LNB]Manchester United: Van der Sar, Evra, Anderson, Rooney, Giggs, Smalling, Hernandez, Vidic, Carrick, Nani, O'Shea.[LNB] Dynamic duo: Wayne Rooney (left) will return to the side to partner Javier Hernandez in attack[LNB]  Pardew braced for a Manchester United backlash at St James' ParkIreland set for St James' bow... almost three months after joining NewcastleAll the latest Newcastle United news, features and opinionAll the latest Manchester United news, features and opinion[LNB]  Explore more:Places: Newcastle
