The reports originated in Portugal where Di Maria is seen as the man to replace Nani who seems certain to leave Old Trafford in the summer.
There are plenty of clubs interested in Nani who has not signed a new contract with United. Arsenal, Liverpool and Russian clubs Zenit and Anzhi are all said to be keeping an eye on the situation.
And interest from so many clubs could ensure that Fergie gets the £15million he will be looking to get for the player and that will get United close to Real's asking price for Di Maria of £20million.
