UNITED Reserves' failed narrowly to collect the Sir Matt Busby Shield at Fir Park on Sunday. The game was staged in collaboration with North and South Lanarkshire Councils to mark the 100th anniversary of Sir Matt Busby's birth and also recognise his enormous contribution to football. The kick-off was preceded by an enthusiastic minute's applause from the 3,470 crowd in memory of United's legendary manager who was regarded as one of Lanarkshire's best loved sons. Motherwell's Jim O'Brien could have claimed the man-of-the-match award inside 20 minutes had he done better with two excellent chances. And United's Ben Amos was also a candidate for the accolade with two spectacular saves to deny O'Brien. Decent openings for the Reds were rare with Oliver Norwood being presented with the best in the 24th minute, but his shot couldn't find the target. Motherwell claimed the winner, and the shield, in the 53rd minute when Giles Coke latched on to John Sutton's pass before crashing the ball past Amos. Sandy Busby, Sir Matt's son, was among the presentation party that handed the shield to Motherwell skipper Mark Reynolds. UNITED: Amos, Fabio, Dudgeon (Wootton 46), Norwood, Chester, Gill, Brandy (Tunnicliffe 54), Hewson, King, Eikrem, Ajose (Morrison 68). Subs not used: Devlin.
